Paddle Canada Skills Training

SKILS offers a wide range of skills training options including the complete Paddle Canada Skills program and custom skills training.

Paddle Canada Flatwater Skills - 8 hours minimum
This course introduces the novice to paddling in enclosed and sheltered waters in calm conditions. It includes a controlled wet exit, forward and turning strokes, and assisted reentries.

Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills - 12 hours minimum
This course covers the theory and skills for a day-long touring kayak trip in sheltered waters and light winds. Included in the training are: a controlled wet exit, forward and turning strokes, edging, introduction to bracing, self and assisted reentries, and an introduction to weather interpretation and navigation.

Paddle Canada Level 2 Skills - 36 hours (4 day) minimum with an overnight
This course teaches the theory and skills for proficient touring kayaking in moderate conditions including overnight camping. Bracing, sculling, and other dynamic strokes are covered along with more complex reentries, including an introduction to the roll. Problem solving and decision making skills are refined through scenarios. Weather and navigation skills are covered as well.

Paddle Canada Level 3 Skills - 4 days with 3 overnight
Our 4-day Level 3 Skills includes practical skills and knowledge for multi-day touring on coastal waters with currents, limited landing options, challenging navigation, limited access to communication and emergency services. The focus is on the development and practical application of leadership, risk-assessment, decision-making, judgment, group management, and general seamanship. Participants will also enhance and continue to develop the skills covered in Level-2, to a higher standard of proficiency.

Paddle Canada Level 4 Skills - 7 days
Our 7 day Level 4 Skills program provides skills and knowledge for multi-day touring on Class 4 waters, which includes surf, currents, winds, limited landing options, and limited access and communication.
