There are several organizations offering sea kayak guide certification across Canada including the SKGABC and AESKO. There are several levels of guide certification, with training and experience a prerequisite.
Day Guide - 4 days minimum
This course prepares new guides to lead day and overnight trips in Class 1 waters and assist on trips in Class 2 waters. SKGABC and AESKO examination included. Successful candidates will also be awarded Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills. Assistant Overnight Guide - 9 days minimum
This course prepares new and practicing guides to lead trips in Class 2 waters and assist on trips in Class 3 waters. This course includes an Assistant Overnight Guide exam. Successful candidates will be awarded Assistant Overnight Guide Certification, Paddle Canada Level 2 Skills and recommended to the SKGABC to challenge the Level 2 Guide exam, which is scheduled separately by the SKGABC. Private exams are also available.
Lead Guide - 3 days minimum
This course prepared experienced guides to lead trips in Class 3 waters. Exam is not included; they are regularly scheduled through the SKGABC (www.skgabc.com). Examinations are scheduled apart from the course. Public exams are available through the SKGABC; for dates, please visit the SKGABC website. Private exams are also available.
